An Exploration of The Harvest Gypsies and the Grapes of Wrath

OVERVIEW:
The Harvet Gypsies is a collection of seven articles which John Steinbeck wrote in 1936 for the San Fancisco News between October 5th and October 12th.  They provided a shockingly detailed investigation into the lives and lifestyles of the displaced mid-western farmes of the Great Depression who were drive from their farms to the fertile valleys of California.  In order to get a first hand account of the horrific poverty and squalor in which these people were forced to live, Steinbeck traveled around California, interviewing the people and observing their lives.  In his seven-part publication, Steinbeck calls for reforms for the better treatment of these hardworking, proud people.  Without them, he explains, the Califonian agricultural economy would collapse.  He warns that these laborers, reduced almost to the level of serfs, will not be able to contain their anger for much longer.  An empty stomach will insight them to action, and the attrocitites commited against them over the past years will provide fuel to keep the fight going.
